Efficacy of heat treatment for disinfestation of concrete grain silos.

چکیده
Field experiments were conducted in 2007 and 2008 to evaluate heat treatment for disinfestations of empty concrete elevator silos. A Mobile Heat Treatment Unit was used to introduce heat into silos to attain target conditions of 50 degrees C for at least 6 h. Ventilated plastic containers with a capacity of 100 g of wheat, Triticum aestivum L., held Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) and Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). Polyvinyl chloride containers with a capacity of 300 g of wheat held adults of Liposcelis corrodens (Heymons) (Psocoptera: Liposcelididae) and Liposcelis decolor (Pearman), which were contained in 35-mm Petri dishes within the grain. Containers were fastened to a rope suspended from the top of the silo at depths of 0 m (just under the top manhole), 10 m, 20 m, and 30 m (silo floor). When the highest temperature achieved was approximately 50 degrees C for 6 h, parental mortality ofR. dominica and T. castaneum, and both psocid species was 98-100%. Progeny production of R. dominica occurred when there was parental survival, but in general R. dominica seemed less impacted by the heat treatment than T. castaneum. There was 100% mortality of L. corrodens at all depths in the heat treatments but only 92.5% mortality for L. decolor, with most survivors located in the bioassay containers at the top of the silo. Results show wheat kernels may have an insulating effect and heat treatment might be more effective when used in conjunction with sanitation and cleaning procedures.

Heat treatment for disinfestation of empty grain storage bins
An alternative to fumigants and insecticides for controlling stored-product insects in empty grain storage bins prior to filling is heat treatment, in which the temperature is quickly raised to a minimum of 50 1C and held there for 2–4 h. Effectiveness of heat treatment on empty grain storage bins was evaluated for five commercial propane and electric heat-treatment systems by measuring air tem...

Probe traps are sensitive tools for detecting populations of beetles in stored grain, but their use for estimating insect density in concrete silos has not been established. Populations of grain beetles infestingwheat in concrete silos at twocommercial storage facilities innorth centralOklahoma were sampled using probe traps and grain probe samples over a 17-wk period. Grain temperature and qua...
متن کاملAssessment of microwave energy for disinfestation of grain
Infestation of grain by insects is widely controlled by the use of insecticides. Use of contact insecticides results in chemical residues left in the food which may have adverse effects on humans. Also insects develop resistance to both contact insecticides and fumigants. Microwave disinfestation offers an alternate way to disinfest grain. Microwaves are electromagnetic waves with frequencies r...
متن کاملA Numerical Modeling for Natural Convection Heat Transfer in Porous Media With Generated Internal Heat Sources
In this paper a numerical method is used to study the unsteady state natural convection heat transfer within a confined porous media with uniform internal heat generation. The governing equations based on the Darcy model and Bossiness approximations are solved, using the finite difference Alternating Direction Implicit (ADI) method. The developed program was used to simulate natural convection ...
متن کاملEffect of heat treatment on the grain structure and mechanical properties of Al-7075 friction stir weld
The fine grain structure of friction-stir welded aluminum alloys is unstable during post weld heat treatment and some grains abnormally grown. In this study, the sequence of abnormal grain growth during T6 heat treatment of Al-7075 friction-stir weld and its effect on mechanical properties of the weld was studied. The results showed that heat treatment in 510 ˚C resulted in drastic grain growth...
